Once you decide on your support layer, it’s time to cozy up to DIY mattress comfort layers. You have many options, so let’s discover what will be best for you.
What is a Comfort Layer?
The ‘Comfort Layer’ is the uppermost layer (or layers) on a mattress and is typically comprised of latex foams, poly foams, and/or wool. It’s the layer that directly cradles you as you sleep.
Approach
There are many ways to approach the comfort layer of your DIY mattress, and we’ll discuss many of them here, along with the shops that can help you get what you need. Remember, you can use mattress ‘toppers’ from almost any place that sells them as the comfort layer on your mattress. You can even stack toppers for a multilayered comfort layer.
Benefits
The magic of a mattress with a zippered cover is that when the top layer (or layers) becomes worn over time, you can simply unzip your mattress and replace the damaged layer rather than throwing out the whole thing.
Alert!
Please keep in mind that more is not always better. One 3″ foam layer is much (much!) more desirable than three 1″ layers. Fewer, thicker layers should almost always be the goal.
