Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

We know DIYing a mattress can seem daunting, but don’t let that stop you! Creating your own mattress is a surprisingly fulfilling project, and with the right guidance, it’s a whole lot easier than you might think.

DIY mattress making is simply assembling your own mattress using the same quality components (or better!) used in factory-assembled mattresses.

You don’t need to be an expert or use any tools. Our easy-to-follow blueprints make it accessible for anyone, even beginners.

The best part? You get a completely customizable mattress that can be repaired or upgraded over time, which significantly extends its lifespan.

We don’t sell mattress kits or even components; we simply provide educational resources and regularly updated lists of online vendors where you can buy the parts you need..

The three basic components you need are:

  • A support layer: Typically, pocketed coils or high-density foam are used to provide support.
  • A comfort layer:  Often made from materials like memory foam, latex foam, and/or wool batting.
  • A zippered mattress cover:  Which allows for easy access to the layers for assembly, repair, and customization.

If you get those three things sorted and ordered, you’re ready to rock. If you’re the ‘upgrade me’ type, then feel free to add:

  • Fancy extras: You may choose additional layers, such as a base layer, transition layer, pillowtop featherbeds, as well as upgraded pillows and other upscale enhancements.

Making your own mattress offers several compelling benefits:

  • Customization: Whether you prefer a firmer feel or a more plush surface, a DIY mattress allows you to create a mattress that’s unique to you.
  • Value Proposition: High-quality mattresses made from organic latex, wool, cotton, and zoned pocketed coils can easily cost you 2x to 4x the price if you buy them factory-made. By assembling your own, you cut out the markups and inflated profit margins built into retail prices.
  • Sustainability: You can replace the parts that wear out (usually the top layer or layers), which reduces overall waste.
  • Healthier Options: Ready-made mattresses can contain flame retardants, adhesives, and even artificial fragrances. When you assemble your own, you can choose non-toxic, organic materials. For parents, knowing exactly what goes into your child’s mattress can offer peace of mind and contribute to better health.

Ultimately, building your own mattress isn’t just about saving money. It’s about investing in something that’s tailored to your needs, healthier for you and your family, and better for the environment.

Assembling your own mattress can take a little bit of extra time, but it’s a highly rewarding process. The first steps – researching, choosing, and ordering – tend to take place even if you’re just buying an off-the-shelf mattress.

  1. Research and Plan: The first step involves understanding who the mattress is for, their sleep style, body weight/height, and personal preferences.
  2. Choose Layers: Based on the info above, you’ll need to decide on your support layer, your comfort layer (or layers), and a zippered cover.
  3. Order Materials: After deciding on your components, you’ll order the materials.
  4. Assembling Your Mattress: When your parts arrive, you can assemble your mattress.

If you need a mattress by this weekend, DIY probably isn’t your best bet. If you want this to be your best, last, and favorite mattress of all time? DIY may be right for you.

The cost of a DIY mattress can vary significantly depending on the materials you choose.

However, in general, a DIY mattress will be a significantly less expensive option than buying a factory-assembled mattress made of the same quality and quantity of materials.

Plus, because the mattress is much easier to repair, you’ll likely also save money in the long run.

Don’t worry! Our step-by-step blueprints are designed for beginners.

Even if you’ve never worked on a DIY project before, we break down the process into manageable tasks.

Not at all!

While there is a learning curve (and we’re here to help walk you through it), DIY mattress making is very much within reach for most people.

If you’re the kind of person who is likely to do a fair bit of research before making a fairly expensive purchase, it’s a similar amount of learning that would allow you to simply buy the components you want and stack them together yourself inside a zippered mattress cover.

We provide easy-to-follow blueprints, share mattress assembly video tutorials, and tips on selecting the right materials.

And! One of the many benefits of DIY is that you’ll also have the flexibility to make adjustments as you go along.

One of the greatest advantages of DIY mattresses is how easy they are to maintain.

If any part starts to wear out or if you want to change the feel of your mattress, you can simply unzip the cover and replace the specific layers.

This is a much more sustainable option than throwing away an entire mattress when only one component fails (and that first component to fail is almost always the top comfort layer).
