DIY mattress zippered covers come in both KNIT and QUILTED varieties. Some covers are all organic, and some are even machine-washable.
What is a Zippered Mattress Cover?
Do not be confused… a zippered mattress cover is not the same as a mattress protector.
A mattress protector is a thin layer of fabric that covers the top and sides of a mattress and protects it from liquids, dust mites, and allergens.
A mattress cover is a thicker and more substantial layer of fabric that encases mattress components. Every mattress sold in stores or online has a cover, and most of them are entirely factory-sealed.
A mattress cover with a zipper closure is the type used in DIY mattress-making.
Customizable
With a zippered mattress cover, you can easily access the inside of your mattress and make changes as needed. For example, if you want a firmer or softer mattress, you can easily remove or add layers of foam, latex, or other materials to achieve your desired level of comfort.
Repairable
In addition to customization, a zippered cover also allows you to make repairs when needed. Over time, mattresses can develop wear & tear, such as sagging or indentations.
With a zippered cover, you can easily access the inside of your mattress and make necessary repairs without having to replace the entire mattress. Over time, this can be a huge money saver.
Upgradable
Finally, a zippered cover allows you to add upgrades to your mattress when your budget allows or when new and exciting mattress components become available.
For example, if you want to try a new type of foam or upgrade your support system, you can simply remove the existing components and replace them with new ones.
Overall, a zippered mattress cover gives you more control over your mattress and allows you to make changes as needed to ensure that you’re getting the best possible sleep.
Blueprints & Case Studies
Reading case studies and looking at blueprints helps clarify the principles of mattress construction and simplifies some of these complex-seeming concepts.
