Adding luxurious extras to your DIY mattress creates not only a more relaxing sleep surface but also elevates your overall sleep experience.
What ARE DIY Mattress Extras?
The fundamentals of a mattress include a support layer, a comfort layer (or two), and a zippered cover. Get those nailed down, and you are really all set.
However! Some of us just wanna be all the extra, and this section is for us.
Desire a top layer of wool batting for superior temperature control? We can help you find that. A coir mattress rug to increase air circulation? Great idea! Your bed is your nest. Go ahead and feather it.
Mattress Rugs
A mattress rug (sometimes called a bed rug) goes under the support layer and is especially useful as a secure base for pocketed coils.
Generally, no more than an inch thick and often only a 1/2 inch, it can simply be a thin layer of very firm polyfoam. However, we really love coconut or hemp coir for its natural breathability and enhanced airflow.
Featherbeds
A featherbed is a sumptuous layer of down and feathers designed to lie atop your regular mattress. The warmth and softness it offers are unparalleled, making it a fantastic choice for those seeking a touch of opulence in their bedroom.
Featherbeds can require regular fluffing to maintain their loft and may not be the best choice for allergy sufferers, though hypoallergenic options are available. But for those dreaming of a bed that feels like floating on clouds, the luxurious comfort of a feather bed is truly irresistible.
Looking for vegan alternatives? There are some fantastic shredded and even ‘noodled’ latex options that are just as luxe and cozy as feathers.
Wool/Cotton Batting
Wool batting as the top layer of a mattress enhances breathability, moisture-wicking, and temperature regulation. It naturally repels dust mites, adding hypoallergenic properties.
For vegans, organic cotton batting serves as a fantastic alternative, offering similar comfort and breathability.
Pillows (are more important than you think)
Pillows are much more than just fluffy headrests; they’re an integral part of your sleep surface, playing a vital role in spinal alignment, pressure relief, and overall comfort.
Choosing the right pillow based on your sleep position, body type, and individual preferences can significantly impact the quality of your sleep and even your health.
Blueprints & Case Studies
Reading case studies and looking at blueprints helps clarify the principles of mattress construction and simplifies some of these complex-seeming concepts.
