The Quasi DIY Mattress: A Shortcut to Custom Comfort

You don’t need a workshop to build a better bed.

(Build smarter comfort using what you already have or can easily get)

When people hear ‘DIY mattress,’ they sometimes (mistakenly) imagine cutting foam, crafting coils, or even sewing their own cover.

Happily for us, that’s not the case at all, and a DIY is really just buying pro-quality mattress components and stacking them together inside an off-the-shelf zippered cover.

We Love a Good Mattress Hack

But if even that seems like more work than you wanna do (and that’s totally fair!), we can shortcut the process even further.

We call it the Quasi DIY Mattress: a super simple mix-and-match setup that gives you vastly improved customization options along with way better longevity.

What Is a Quasi DIY Mattress?

A quasi-DIY mattress is part store-bought, part custom-tuned.

You start with a simple, good-quality store-bought base mattress; something firm, supportive, and not over-quilted (absolutely no pillowtops or eurotops). We want this as bare-bones as possible.

We’ll use this as our support layer, so if you want pocketed coils, choose a mattress that utilizes them.

Then you add your own comfort layers (toppers, wool pads, latex slabs, etc.) on top. (If you are making a split king, you can use two twin XLs, as that is the same as a king mattress.)

It’s like getting a ‘starter kit’ for DIY mattress-making:

  • The support layer is handled for you in the form of a basic mattress.
  • The comfort layers are entirely up to you in the form of toppers of your choice.
  • And best of all, you can change or replace those comfort layers whenever you like, or when they wear out (just like a regularly assembled DIY mattress).

Why The Quasi DIY Mattress Approach Works

This hybrid strategy checks all the boxes:

  • Availability: For rebels in Canada or regions with limited DIY mattress support layer component shipping (particularly pocketed coils, as these are tricky to source outside the US), this route bypasses most cross-border headaches.
  • Customization: Sleep on latex today, add wool next month, then swap or upgrade as your budget allows. Your mattress evolves with you.
  • Affordability: A plain, high-quality firm pocket-coil mattress + your own customized comfort layers costs far less than a fully factory-made ‘luxury hybrid.’
  • Repairability: When your comfort layer wears out (and it will), you’ll easily replace only that piece, not the whole mattress.

Step-by-Step: How to Build Your Quasi DIY Mattress

1️⃣ Start With a Simple, Firm Mattress as a Support Layer

Look for a mattress that’s:

  • Firm or medium-firm for medium to heavy sleepers
  • Medium for medium-weight side sleepers and most all lightweight sleepers
  • Non-pillowtop (we’ll basically be creating one of our own)
  • Simple cover (no deep quilting or euro-tops).

Most basic mattresses will work perfectly well, so long as they have a nice, flat top and/or minimal top padding.

2️⃣ Choose Your Comfort Layers

Now the fun part: personalization

  • Latex (2–3″) → buoyant, breathable, durable.
  • Wool or Wool-latex blends → soft, temperature-balancing, naturally flame-resistant.
  • Memory Foam → contouring and pressure-relieving.
  • Microcoils or Fiber Pads → add bounce or airflow.

3️⃣ Test, Tweak, and Tinker

Here’s where the ‘DIY’ part really makes a big difference:

  • FIRST: Start with the topper you’re most interested in for a week or two. Love it and think it’s perfect? Great. You’re done. Want it a bit softer, more sink-in (less sink-in?), bouncier, firmer? Add another layer that fits that bill and give that combo a go.
  • THEN: Adjust positioning or comfort layering order (yes, order matters!).
  • FINALLY: Take notes on firmness, pressure points, and temperature. Lather, rinse, repeat. Mix and match until you find the comfort layers combo that feels just right.

4️⃣ Wrap It Up (Optional but Highly Recommended)

Once you’ve found that Goldilocks perfect comfort layer, encasing the whole works (basic support mattress + mattress toppers) in a zippered cover gives your setup a unified feel.

Or, you can buy a zippered cover for only the topper(s), and just plop that puppy on top of the base mattress.

Either way, it’s going to look very polished and complete while still offering you the unique customizability and repairability of a fully DIY mattress.

Our best tip here is to leave buying the zippered cover until last, so you know for sure how tall a cover you’ll definitely need. And keep in mind that adding a cover tends to firm things up a bit, so factor that in.
